Non-Destructive Testers use a variety of scientific methods and equipment to assess the integrity and properties of a material without damaging it. Types of testing methods include: eddy current testing, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing.

You enjoy working with tools, equipment, instruments and machinery.

You are methodical and good at following established processes and procedures.

You are comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces and in all types of weather.

Responsibilities

  • Determine type of testing methods to be used for the assessment
  • Conduct testing on materials, components, structures, etc. following established processes and procedures
  • Compile, analyze and communicate data gathered from testing methods
  • Can be found working in a variety of sectors including construction, manufacturing, automotive, etc.

Entering the Trade

Non-Destructive Tester is not a designated trade in Nova Scotia. Individuals looking to enter the field should complete high school and seek additional education through various post-secondary institutions/organizations that offer training in the various testing methods (for example, Quality Control Council of Canada, Canadian Welding Bureau, etc.). Non-destructive testing certification by Natural Resources Canada is available in three levels and is usually required by employers.
